    WTF is Electional Astrology?!

WTF is Electional Astrology (and how tf do you use it)?! Electional astrology (aka event astrology) is when an astrologer strives to find (or does find) the most auspicious date, time, and location for some event to take place. This practice has been around in some form since Babylonian times (16 BCE)…and still being used in practice today. Even though I have a good number of clients that have me cast electional charts for different life events, I have actually never written about THIS type of astrology, either (kind of like how I had never written about horary astrology until recently). Not only that, but the crime/forensic astrology charts that I’ve done (both by myself and with Brandy) are event charts (just not the “elected by the querent” kind). Same idea remains though – reading the chart of the “event” in question as a stand-alone chart.
**If you would like for me to help you elect a date for an important event in your life, I would love to help you with that! You can purchase a reading from me here (by clicking the text), or if you would like to get in contact with me by email first, you can email me at ellie@saturnseason.com. If you are more of a watcher than a reader, here is the video that I did on this subject.

Something to keep in mind when using electional astrology to cast charts – THERE IS NO PERFECT CHART! This just simply doesn’t exist. While you might strive to find the “perfect” chart for some major event in your life, more than like you will need to settle for “good enough.” Sorry, that’s my Capricorn Moon and Saturn rising ass being realistic hahaha.

In order to play around with electional astrology, you do need to have a decent handle on the planets, houses, signs, and aspects in an astrology chart. Meaning this might not be the kind of astrology fuck with in a serious way if you don’t have a decent handle on such things. To help you with getting a handle on what the astrology chart says, keep this in mind:
*Planets are WHAT energy is wanting/needing/”should” be expressed
*Houses are WHERE/AREAS OF LIFE that energy is expressed through
*Signs are HOW energy is expressed
*Aspects tie the whole thang together

Some “Guidelines” for Electing Charts using Electional Astrology

    1. The Moon
⭐️ For most things that you would want to elect a chart for in life, you want those things to go to “plan.” When the Moon is voc, it is less likely that things will go to plan (they can more easily “go off course”). There can also be a sort of “failure to launch” aspect with the Moon voc which tends not to be great for (big) life events. For instance, let’s say you wanted to start a business. If the Moon were voc at the time the business was started (when doors opened for business, when the business was incorporated, etc.), that could make it harder for the business to really “take off.” To check and see when the Moon is voc, here is a void of course Moon calculator from astro-seek.
-There are times that it might benefit you to have the Moon voc (though they would be few and far between). If you have a feeling that you KNOW how some event will play out and you DON’T want it to play out that way, having said event take place under a voc Moon could be helpful. For instance, let’s say you have some civil court thing going on which you get to choose the time and date that it happens. Let’s also say that you have a feeling HOW this court thing will turn out and you don’t like the feeling you have about it. Setting the time and date (location would be wherever the courthouse is) for when the Moon is voc might actually benefit you in this scenario.
⭐️Electing a chart where the Moon isn’t harshly aspected (especially the square aspects) is a good thing to shoot for. Applying aspects between the Moon and other planets matter the most (once the Moon is separating from a planet, angle, etc., the less the square matters).
⭐️If you can get the Moon in the house (area of life) for which you are electing the chart, all the better. For instance, if you are electing a chart for the start of a business getting the Moon in the 10th House might be a good idea. If you are electing a chart for a marriage, getting the Moon in the 7th House (or even the 8th House) would be ideal.
    2. Mars, Saturn, Uranus & Pluto
⭐️Under A LOT of contexts (though not all of them), you want to keep Mars and Uranus off of the major angles and out of the angular houses. Uranus can be disruptive (which isn’t usually ideal for major life events), and Mars can just poke & aggravate things (again, also not ideal for major life events).
–For those unfamiliar, angular houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th Houses in the chart.
⭐️Oftentimes it’s not great to find Saturn in an angular house (or conjunct one of the angles), either. I say “oftentimes” because this isn’t always the case. If the event that you’re casting the chart for requires a lot of solidity, structure, or any other sort of Saturnian expression (or something under the domain of Saturn), Saturn in an angular house/conjunct one of the angles may not be a “bad” thing.
⭐️Pluto is kind of a hit or miss in electional charts. Because Pluto is so transformative, if you are casting a chart for some event that you want to go off in a “calm” manner, Pluto conjunct the angles/in angular houses WON’T USUALLY provide that “calm” (it’s far too tumultuous). However, if it’s an event that needs a boost of evolutionary energy, Pluto can be very helpful on an angle/in an angular house.
    3. Retrograde Planets
⭐️While I’ll “ride at dawn” for retrograde planets in a natal chart and most other astrology charts, electional charts are where they can get dicey for me. It’s likely that there will be at least one planet retrograde in any event chart (it is what it is), but it’s generally good practice to pick a time for the event (whatever event it is) where the chart ruler/planetary ruler of the Ascendant is DIRECT. Having a retrograde chart ruler tends to just make things more difficult.
⭐️Not only is it a good idea to have the chart ruler direct, but it’s also a good idea to have the planetary ruler of the house that has domain over the event direct as well. For instance, if you are starting a business, having the planetary ruler of the 10th House direct would be advised.
⭐️A good “rule” of thumb is to have Venus direct when getting married, proposing to someone, starting a relationship, etc. This is very general (and there are always outlier situations where Venus Rx wouldn’t matter much), but should AT LEAST be kept in the back of your mind. Since Venus deals with aesthetics and beauty, it’s typically advised to not have cosmetic procedures done or do any major changes to your appearance when Venus is Rx.  Another thing like this deals with Mercury and having it direct for any event that is communication related, signing any kind of papers & documents, and things of that nature.

Looking at event charts from a retrospective lens can be really enlightening. This can show you what you want to see and don’t want to see when casting electional charts. The chart below (and declination table) are the time, date, and place for when two people got married.

Chart for a Wedding (event/electional chart)
    Declination Table for electional astrology

Above we have Uranus and Mars in the 7th and 10th Houses (respectively). Ideally, you don’t want EITHER of these planets in the angular houses (and the 7th & 10th Houses are angular houses). The 7th House is the “marriage” house (among other things)….which having the great disrupter in this house doesn’t seem like it would bode well for a legal marriage (in most cases). Mars in the 10th House is conjunct the ruler of the Sagittarius 4th House (home & family), poised to aggravate home and family affairs (?). Jupiter is ALSO the traditional ruler of the Pisces 7th House, which feels like Mars would ALSO aggravate the legal marriage in general. Mars stands out even more since it is out of bounds. Mars out of bounds can be incredibly driven (which can be fantastic), but it can also be a mean son of a bitch (and it’s not something I would want to see in a marriage chart, ideally). Pluto is in the 4th House, which does stand out. LOTS of evolution at home, with family, and in the private spheres of life…but that really depends on how the two people “work” that evolution in any case. Pluto can also express intensity, depth, secrets, and can be just generally tumultuous. If Pluto can’t function at its highest vibrational capacity, it’s probably best to keep it out of the angular houses and/or off the major angles. Saturn is just chillin’ in the 2nd House which doesn’t bother me on its own. Even though the Part of Fortune isn’t something typically looked at in these charts, the close conjunction between it and Saturn does catch my attention. Since the PoF can be things that “befall” us, having Saturn (a planet that *can* limit, restrict, isolate, etc.) conjunct it seems like it could cause different challenges to befall the marriage (either over the WHOLE marriage or just on the wedding day).

The Moon isn’t void of course in this chart, but it IS applying in a square with the MC/IC axis (which I’m not crazy about). The Moon in Virgo is also in the 12th House which I’m really not crazy about seeing in the chart of two people getting married. Look, I’m a 12th House Sun myself – I’ll go to bat for the 12th House. However, because it IS a house that is where “unconscious” stuff goes/is and is a house that deals with grief and loss, this just doesn’t seem like the place to have the Moon. This chart has a Virgo Ascendant with Mercury Rx in Cancer as the chart ruler.
**Speaking of the Moon, it’s parallel Uranus in this chart. This could make this marriage – both the day of the marriage and the marriage itself – more unpredictable than one might want a marriage (or their wedding day) to be.

There are a couple of other things in this chart that stand out even if they might not be considered by other people who cast electional charts. Chiron in Pisces conjunct the Descendant (from the 6th House) feels painful, like it could bring more pain than necessary to the marriage. Healing is *also* possible here (because Chiron DOES heal as well), but keeping Chiron off of the angles/out of the angular houses just seems like a good thing in this context. Another thing that is like a bright flashing sign is Venus in Leo square the nodal axis (and Venus being the ruler of the Taurus South Node). Venus wants to express “relationship” stuff (among other things), and having this square the nodal axis makes me think that there is SOME kind of “hang up” going on (either something that was going on when these two got married OR would be down the line in the marriage). Also, with the chart ruler Mercury Rx AND Venus as the ruler of the South Node, there is something about this chart that feels like it “goes back” too much; there just isn’t much “forward” motion, in my opinion.
——————-This marriage did not last; they ended up getting divorced———————-

Other Things to Consider with Electional Charts
    1. Intercepted signs
⭐️Intercepted signs in the houses are possible since I use the Regiomontanus house system for event charts/electional charts (unless a client specifies otherwise, which I’m happy to oblige). Honestly, I don’t usually care much if signs are intercepted in an electional chart. While that signs energy IS easier to access if it’s not intercepted, there is a planetary ruler for which that sign’s energy CAN and WILL be able to flow through. The only time that intercepted signs “bother” me is when ALL of the planetary rulers of the signs intercepted happen to ALSO be intercepted in those signs as well. The reason for that is if the planetary rulers of the signs intercepted are also in the intercepted signs it can make it more challenging to access BOTH the sign and planetary energy (things don’t flow quite as easily).
–For instance, let’s say you have Cancer intercepted in the 1st House and Capricorn intercepted in the 7thHouse (interceptions happen in pairs), and BOTH the Moon and Saturn are intercepted in Cancer. THIS would make it more challenging to access Cancer and Capricorn energy in the 1st and 7th House due to the planetary rulers of both being intercepted.
    2. The Moon in detriment or fall
⭐️You know, there are times that I really don’t give a shit if the Moon is in detriment (Capricorn) or in fall (Scorpio) in electional charts. I know there are people who would disagree with this and that’s totally fine – we all do things our own way :). Luckily the Moon changes signs every couple of days so it’s usually easy enough to time some event for when the Moon isn’t in detriment or fall if this really bothers you (I have some clients that it does bother and I’m happy to respect that). This doesn’t automatically turn me off to a chart, though. If you are, say, starting a business (which is Capricorn territory), having the Moon in Capricorn *might* not be a bad place to find the Moon…especially if the Moon is making a bunch of really nice (applying) aspects to other things in the chart.
⭐️Kind of like with the retrograde planets, I would rather not see the Moon in detriment or fall if the Moon is the chart ruler (which would be the case if the Ascendant was Cancer).
    3. Surgery
⭐️This needed its own section because it’s something that comes up often enough to mention. This part needs to be in all caps: IF YOU NEED SURGERY AND ITS LIFE OR DEATH (OR YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE IS GREATLY DIMISHED BY NOT HAVING SURGERY) PLEASE JUST GO GET SURGERY. Seriously. Don’t try to elect a good “time” for it – just go have the surgery. With saying that, if you are having electional surgergy/non-emergent surgery, etc., THIS is when you can elect a good time and date (setting the location for the hospital/city the hospital is in) for the surgery to take place.
⭐️Beyond the other things already mentioned about the Moon, it’s generally good practice to have surgery when the Moon is NOT in the sign that rules the part of the body having surgery. For instance, you might not want to have some kind of elective/non-emergent hip surgery when the Moon is in Sagittarius (since the hips fall under Sagittarius territory).
⭐️If you can avoid it, not electing to have surgery on a Full Moon is probably a good idea (or during either a lunar or solar eclipse). But….IF YOU NEED TO HAVE SURGERY AND IT’S DURING A FULL MOON (OR AN ECLIPSE), JUST GO HAVE SURGERY.
⭐️If you can avoid it, since Mars rules over sharp objects, knives and surgery, it’s probably best to NOT elect to have surgery under Mars Retrograde. Again though, IF YOU NEED TO HAVE SURGERY AND MARS IS RETROGRADE, JUST GO HAVE SURGERY.

I’m sure (like 1000000% sure) that I will have more to say about this topic (because there is so much more to say!). Stay tuned 🤣
  • More on Out of Bounds (OOB) Planets

Yesterday I brought up the idea of out of bounds planets on the subreddit during the “Guess the Asshole” game. The following is posted to the subreddit, but I figured I would also post it here on the blog for those of you that don’t do the reddit thing (and there is probably some overlap from my previous OOB posts from about a year and a half ago).

The definition for Out of Bounds (OOB) planets is “A planet that exceeds a declination of 23-degrees 26 minutes 28 seconds either North or South of the celestial equator.”

Also, just for definitions sake, Declinations are the movements of the planets North and South of the celestial equator. They can create major aspects called **parallels** and **contra-parallels.** Parallels operate like conjunctions and contra-parallels operate like oppositions.  This is another discussion for another post entirely, lol, but I did figure it should be mentioned.)

Once a planet is out of bounds it is kind of free do to as it pleases. It’s no longer under the dominion of the Sun meaning that it can behave however it sees fit to behave. The planets that have the ability to go OOB are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter (which does so rarely), Uranus, and Pluto. The Sun, Saturn and Neptune don’t go OOB, and this is because they have the a very similar declination to the Sun. The Moon is the planet that goes OOB the most often, and the years that the North Node is closest to 0-degrees Aries are the years that you will see the Moon go OOB A LOT. In these years you will also see an upswing in OOB action across all the planets that can go OOB.

So….what happens when a planet goes OOB? That planet usually has a way of testing the limits. What limits exactly? It usually has to do with limits that we collectively place on one another in society (what’s “acceptable” and what’s “not acceptable” kind of shit). These are planets that push boundaries and want to push through any “barrier” that seems to exist. These planets don’t give a fuck about shit like that, giving rules and the status quo a giant middle finger. This can be a really great thing; we do need planets like this and the people that have them to move society forward…..they are usually the change makers in some capacity either in their own sphere of influence (in a micro way) or in collective ways on a larger scale (in a macro way). What happens TO a planet when it goes OOB? Below you will find a list of both the positive and negative sides to the planets being OOB. People that have OOB planets may find that they don’t exhibit ONLY the positive or the negative sides to the planet, but they may instead find they encompass a little of both.

**Moon OOB:**This usually adds an amplification of intuition to the way the Moon functions and the native usually knows this (and would be smart to use this intuition). The emotions are pretty strong and intense regardless of sign and regardless if the native shows them openly or not. It causes the native to dance to beat of their own drum (to the music running through their head that other people aren’t hearing). These people generally need a lot of emotional freedom and have a high degree of emotional intelligence. It helps the native to have a natural understanding of other people and they are usually like a spark of inspiration (both to themselves and to other people). On the negative side of things, you could find the Moon OOB causes the native to have extreme mood swings, a complete disregard for rules and social conventions (to the point of being to their detriment), and a complete lack of sympathy/empathy (though I don’t see it manifest this particular way often, it is possible). These people might also have habits that are self-destructive in nature (and this is the particular negative trait that I have noticed people that exemplify the positive traits of an OOB Moon overall might still have to battle with).

**Mercury OOB:** This can cause the native to be willing to communicate the things that other people wouldn’t dare communicate (to say the unspeakable). They are usually pretty intelligent and their mind operates in a different way than the rest of us. There is usually a talent for connecting people via communication and even media, and they usually make pretty great teachers and speakers. Perception is very important for these natives, and how they perceive the information that they are taking into their mind; if they function from the positive side of an OOB Mercury their perception is usually on point. On the negative end of the spectrum, the perception that these people have can be wildly off (they might misunderstand what is going on around them entirely). It can also cause obsessive and/or compulsive thoughts, and can cause the way that they think differently to be SO different that they end up not feeling socially connected to anyone and/or to disconnect entirely.

**Venus OOB:** This planet being OOB can make the native highly desirable in their own sphere of influence on a micro level and publicly on a macro level. They generally have really great taste and know “beauty” (even if it’s different than what the collective at large finds “beautiful”). Because of this these natives are generally ahead of trends and challenge (and change) the collective’s notion of what “beauty” is. They usually have a knack for making other people feel very at ease in their presence, and for being able to give other people what they need in any given situation. Venus OOB usually adds oodles of magnetism and charisma; these people have “IT” (or “zsa-zsa-zou”) and they are usually pretty entertaining with a fair amount of artistic ability. Values are another thing that stand out here; these people might value things in a different way than most, or their values in general might be different. On the negative side, Venus OOB can cause someone to be too hedonistic, materialistic, and envious of what other people have (not focusing on what THEY have). There can be something “unusual” about their notion of relationships and they somehow need to break boundaries on what is accepted in relationships and what isn’t (this one can be a positive or negative, it really depends on WHAT that is and how they use it).

**Mars OOB:** This can cause the native to be super fucking driven; these are the people that really have an ability to get shit done. Their stamina is usually unparalleled and they have a tremendous amount of leadership ability. They usually feel an urge to act on their instincts and impulses (and THIS can be positive or negative, depending on what those instincts and impulses  are telling them to do). They might seem more “masculine” in nature and they usually have a good amount of confidence that they want to act on and exhibit. On the negative end of things, this can cause the person to come off as incredibly selfish, forceful, and/or dominating. Their temper can be an issue; Mars OOB can cause the person to get really fucking pissed off really fucking quick (sometimes this seems nonsensical in nature) with possibly violent results.

**Jupiter OOB:** When Jupiter is OOB it usually adds an amplification of luck for the native in their life. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the ones that win the lottery or anything like that, but these people might seem luckier in general (they might even FEEL luckier than a lot of people). Their beliefs are usually very strong, and it might even cause them to have a belief in the impossible (not easily giving up on this). There might be a deep need to travel and see the world in a way that goes WAY beyond Jupiters need to travel (like they need travel like the air they breathe). These people have a need to expand themselves beyond any limits that currently exist and this is usually done in a BIG way. Expansion is one of those things that can really be a positive or a negative thing – it really depends HOW they are expanding and in what area they are trying to expand. Dogmatism is another negative trait of Jupiter OOB (but this is to an extreme level).

**Uranus OOB:**These people, like the Moon OOB, need a whole bunch of freedom. They don’t allow anyone or anything to fence them in. These are the people who are more than willing to try things that have never been tried before for the sake of innovation and experimentation. The rebels, the revolutionaries, the humanitarians, and the weirdos (and this may be seen publicly on a larger scale or within family and friend groups on a smaller scale – these people naturally stand out). There is usually a deep feeling of being different from other people that goes beyond the usual notion of Uranian difference, which they can either use to their advantage or their detriment. These people can completely detach themselves from everything if they want (which can be both a good thing or a bad thing depending on the circumstance). Their behavior can be downright shocking or radical just for the pure sake of these which can put others that are more conventional “off” and cause them not to be taken as seriously in their quest for liberation (both personally and collectively).

**Pluto OOB:** This planet being OOB can cause the native to have a shit load of intensity and/or magnetism (and this kind of intensity goes beyond Pluto’s normal intensity and magnetism levels). They are are passionate, usually pretty sexual (maybe even hyper-sexual), and usually have very strong convictions about things. Secrets usually mean a lot to these people, and they are more inclined than most to hang on to their secrets (and those of other people). These people usually go through several distinct periods in their lifetimes and these periods show their many marked soul transformations (and they could even go through a few different transformations during one period). This planet OOB can also cause a host of darker things to come out in the personality; these people might have a shit load of rage and can probably be incredibly violent and vengeful (though this might not be out in the open but more something these natives keep secret). I feel like there is a need for people with Pluto OOB to embrace the darkness and heaviness of Pluto…..not necessarily in the sense of acting on any “dark” desires but admitting they exist and handling them in a way that doesn’t hurt themselves or anyone else (should this exist in the native).

And just to be clear, even some of the positive traits mentioned above could be utilized in a negative capacity in some way. Same thing goes for the more negative traits, which if applied positively could be a positive thing. My point is not everything is black and white.

How can YOU find out if you have any planets out of bounds? Go to http://www.astro.com and create your chart (first go to “free horoscopes” at the top of the page and then go to extended chart selection and enter in your information). Once you pull the actual chart you will see a button above the chart that says “PDF additional tables.” Click on that and something called “Natal Chart (Data Sheet)” will appear. Under the chart that says “Planet Positions” you will see a column for “Declination.” Check the declinations for the planets and if you have a planet that is at a declination of 23-degrees 26 minutes 28 seconds or beyond you have an out of bounds planet. If you find you have an OOB planet think about HOW that planet manifests in an OOB way in your life. Share below how you feel the OOB planet plays out in your life (if you feel like sharing). I know I’d personally love to hear your experiences with them. And if you would like for me to read for you, that can be done here 🙂

  • North & South Nodes along the Taurus/Scorpio Axis

**In this post, we will take the House that the North Node falls in out of the equation and just focus on what it means to have your North Node in a specific sign (and what it means to have the South Node in the polarity sign). Usually with things having to do with the Nodal Axis (and growing into our North Node), a catalyst occurs in our lives that edges us out of the comfort of the South Node and into the uncharted territory of the North. This catalyst could be something major and life changing (such as a death, marriage, or divorce), or even something much more minor. Something will kind of shake us internally, saying “Wake up, fucker. You’re supposed to move beyond this,” whatever the “this” in the situation is. Once this waking up occurs, you will begin to move towards the North Node. Though, in all my years of study, this period of waking up usually doesn’t occur until the person’s first Saturn Return, or after it.**

North Node in Taurus/South Node in Scorpio: If you have the North Node in Taurus, your North Node mission in this life is all about security and stability in the physical world, to learn to take care of yourself for yourself, to calm down/slow down and relax. In this lifetime, your soul wanted to evolve into something more earthy, grounded and stable in the physical reality. This is probably a far cry from your South Node in Scorpio, which indicates that you spent your previous lifetime (or maybe several lifetimes) in a state of change and in the intangible/spiritual world. There may have been a lot of upheaveal and chaos (which you may or may not have caused), issues with power (either misusing your own power or not standing up to other people’s when you should’ve), and possibly even some abuse (either with you as the giver or receiver). In this lifetime, your soul wanted to chill the fuck out; your soul is tired from all the chaos and drama that your past lives brought you, hence the North Node here in more relaxed, slow moving, and calm Taurus. There is also a real inner strength inside of you, for having lived through some pretty dark shit in your past lives you have the emotional wherewithal to handle just about anything this lifetime throws at you. The thing here is that when this lifetime throws something really awful your way, your knee-jerk reaction may be to react through the Scorpio South Node themes, feeding into the chaos which makes everything worse for you, as well as having an almost obsessive compulsive streak when going after the perpetrators of these curveballs. When life throws those really terrible curveballs your way take a deep breath, center yourself, and relax. Keep the stability that you have tried so hard to cultivate in this lifetime (whether you realize it or not). And through everything in this life, please don’t forget to enjoy yourself & take the time to smell the roses.

North Node in Scorpio/South Node in Taurus: This lifetime, Scorpio North Node person, is all about transcendence beyond the physical world and all the comforts that you naturally enjoy there. In this lifetime, your soul really wanted to get to the depths of it’s emotional core and to shake things up. In your past life (or past lifetimes) you probably focused heavily on obtaining these creature comforts that make you feel good and secure (whether that be money, a comfortable and beautiful home, nice possessions, etc). You also probably took things slowly, were self-made (in the sense that everything you obtained in the physical world was obtained for you, by you), probably didn’t let a whole lot ruffle your feathers (even if this was to your own detriment….maybe you should’ve let some things bother you sometimes), and all of these themes and energies are probably what you feel the most comfortable expressing in this lifetime. You are probably a naturally very self-sufficient and stable person in all ways, from knowing who you are to being able to handle things yourself without much help from others. The more rational side of yourself usually wins out to any real deep emotions that you may have from time to time. Don’t fight those emotions in this life, for they are part of what you are here to understand. You are supposed to understand and come to terms with those emotions that in previous lifetimes you probably dismissed in favor of calming down and keeping things on an even-keel. This lifetime should be all about moving into the spiritual and intangible world, moving away from the very fixed/rigid beliefs that you may have, and transcending to something greater than you can imagine. Once you learn to let go of things in the physical/tangible world (and it may not be just learning, but an actual catalyst that forces you to let go of things like possessions), you will be on the path to evolving into your North Node’s mission.

To flesh out the nodal axis story further (to get the whole picture), you will need to also consider where the planetary ruler of the North and South Nodes fall in the chart by sign, house, and aspects made. In the case of Taurus and Scorpio you would be looking at Venus and Mars & Pluto.

If you would like me to read your nodal axis for you, get a reading from me here 🙂 Also, if you are more of a watcher than a reader, head to my YouTube channel where I have a bunch of content on the subject of the nodes.
